Overview

Monsters or something are destroying the world. Everything is now submerged in water, some sci-fi submarines are mankinds only hopes. Oh, them and one dude who’s the world’s greatest something.

As you may be able to tell it bored me so quickly that I didn’t really care any further than this.

Substance

In short, the characters annoy me, the story didn’t engage me and frankly I never fully understood a lot of what the villains ever said….
The shark-man dude has a particularly irritating voice.

Rating: 0 out of 5 stars

Style

The mix of 3D and classic 2D is flawed mostly by 90s CGI being a bit rough. Some designs are nice enough (like the war-whale thing – in fact mostly that), but the execution and animation aren’t.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars

Entertainment

Oh god no…

I found it hard not to wander off and do to much while it was on. Eventually I just gave up on it. I don’t know how it ends. I’m just glad that it does.

Rating: 0 out of 5 stars

Summary

AVOID! A real pity since I’ve been looking forward to seeing this for a while now.

Instead, hunt down and watch the far better ‘Last Exile‘, a 26 part serial by the same company, Gonzo.

Overview

Below is the best summary I can give it, but it is the first 10 or so minutes of the film, so you may not want to read it. Your call, friend.

<fieldset class="spoiler">
 <legend>

 warning: spoiler
 </legend>

Senior Biggs proposes to his girlfriend in such a shocking manner as to cause her to die of a heart attack. In an attempt to help him get over his dead lady friend his friend tells him to move on and so he randomly asks the first girl he sees (the lovely Fisher) to marry him. She says yes and the madness begins.

 </fieldset>

Substance

A fun little story, with enough character, charm, silliness and jokes to make it worth the watch. Although, Biggs doesn’t work as a likeable main lead for me. He’s a bit like Zach Braff - whiny and irritating. Unlike, Braff he is still the pie-guy. Poor him.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Style

Hard to judge style in something like this… Until such time as I figure out how style fits into this whole thing, I’m gonna put this one at 3.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Entertainment

Very entertaining. If you like your rom-coms (and they are a guilty pleasure of mine) you’ll probably (hopefully) get caught up in the silliness of this.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary

If you like your rom-coms I’d happily recommend this one at some point.
Plus Isla Fisher is quite lovely. Lucky Sasha…

Overall Rating: 3.67 out of 5 stars

Overview

A retelling of the classic Beowulf tale, wherein a king sends out a call for heroes to come fight the Grendel, a monster that is terrorising his village. The mighty Beowulf comes, conquers and more.

Substance

The story isn’t too bad, but Beowulf himself is one of those superhuman type characters with no flaws, so you know he’s always gonna come through, which really takes a lot of the excitement away.

It’s hard to comment on the performances since they are all CGI and kinda fit more under ‘Style’, but they are a little bit wooden. I can only assume that is the fault of the CGI, since it is quite a high calibre cast.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Style

The CGI looks nice enough, and there are some cool set pieces, but the performances are somewhat wooden and frankly I’d have been happy enough to see it in live action.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Entertainment

Some great moments, and some fantastic thrills, but always somewhat ruined by the fact that you know Beowulf will come through.
Kinda removes the excitement factor.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Summary

I can’t honestly suggest avoiding it at all costs, but equally I wouldn’t recommend you go out of your way to see it either.

Overall Rating: 2.67 out of 5 stars

Director: Guy Ritchie

Overview

Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes gets a new lease of life in Guy Ritchie’s, em, Sherlock Holmes….

Holmes is on the case of a serial murderer and breaks in on the last stages of a sacrificial ritual. Capturing the criminal he kick starts a series of black magic events that could shake the foundation of the British Empire.

Substance

Both RDJ and Law give good performances as the leads; both close enough to my preferred takes on their characters, thought Holmes is a tad scrappy for my liking.

The plot is quiet a good Holmes plot and fits with many of the stories I remember in previous incarnations, such as the ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’ and ‘Murder by Decree’ – the Ripper case. In many ways a reasonably standard Holmes plot. Something unexplainable and unstoppable happens, then Holmes explains and stops it, but now with the sharp humour one has come to expect from both RDJ and Ritchie.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Style

The whole Victorian thing looks lovely, and there are plenty of fancy looking techniques to represent Holmes’ super sleuth skills. A lovely looking film all around.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Entertainment

Quite thrilling in parts. Plenty of action sequences and lots of whodunnits*. The biggest flaw is that with whodunnits it can be nice to try figure out whodunnit. And since they want Sherlock to appear to be Mr Supersleuth, they don’t give you any clues to anything so that he can overwhelm you by flashbacking to ‘clues’.

*in this case mysteries, since you know whodunnit.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Summary

Well worth a watch. Glad to hear they’ve signed on to do a sequel. Nice to see the Holmes franchise on the go again.

Overall Rating: 3.67 out of 5 stars

Overview

Mankind has found another world hosting life – Pandora. Pandora is

poisonous to Humans,

filled with alien life – one race of which is sentient, the Na’vi and

has some mineral man wants.

Enter the Avatars; synthesised Na’vi bodies controlled by humans in pods. They can breath in, and interact with, this world. Our hero, Jake Sully is an ex-military cripple, given the chance to walk again in one of these Avatars. He enters their world and learns about it for scientific and military purposes…

Substance

The story is nothing new. In fact it’s FernGully or The Last of the Mohicans in space. But the performances are solid.
There are a few clangers, such as the name of the hard to get substance, ‘Unobtainium’, or the heavy handed foreshadowing, for example:
<fieldset class="spoiler">
 <legend>

 warning: spoiler
 </legend>

The painfully obvious bit at the chief’s chair with the Turok’s skull. Whoever rides one of these beasts will be a leader. Wink, wink.

 </fieldset>
Also, the plot, the main character and his actions are quite predictable, which isn’t great.
But it’s got no plot holes (as far as I saw), so I can let alot of that slide.
Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Style

It’s well lovely, it is. The world looks great and interesting. The alien race is cool. I love how it all ties in together and feels real.
The bio-luminescence night world stuff looks great too.
The helicopter-salamanders seem like an odd, vomit-inducing, evolution, but I’m no Darwin, so maybe it’s possible….
I saw it in 3D. Don’t know if it matters if you don’t.
My only real criticism was:
<fieldset class="spoiler">
 <legend>

 warning: spoiler
 </legend>

When he rounds up the various tribes at the end, I was disappointed that there was no variety in them. Essentially wherever the tribes lived they were only slight variations on the main tribe we get to know.

 </fieldset>
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Entertainment

Very entertaining. I was caught up in the story fairly early into it, and found the survival stuff very tense and the action stuff very engaging. I cared about the characters and their various plights.
Again, my criticism stems from the predictability of the story and the character’s actions which, for me, always hinders my enjoyment.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary

Well worth the watch. Not sure if 3D makes a difference or not, some folk liked it, others not so much, others still didn’t really care. I think the film is good enough all around to survive without the gimmick.
Looking forward to seeing how it survives rewatching and the translation to the smaller screen.
Overall Rating: 3.83 out of 5 stars
